Senior project brings Futsal to Sonoma

Sonoma Futsal is a new youth sports league that gives Sonoma Valley kids the chance to develop their soccer foot skills during the wet winter months. Games are Sunday afternoons through February, at the Altimira gym. There are no practices, as the emphasis is on playing. The game is fast-paced with plenty of action for every player. Futsal is a South American soccer game played on a basketball court by five players on a side with the court lines being out-of-bounds and a small goal on each end. Because the court is small and doesn’t utilize the walls as does indoor soccer, the players develop foot skills for making and receiving quick short precise passes. Founded as the senior project of Sonoma Valley High students Halli Dobson and Pedro Napoles, the Valley’s enthusiasm resulted in 70 players, ages 13 and under, filling 10 teams.
