Sonoma High’s agriculture students and FFA members competed in the opening and closing ceremonies of the public speaking contest at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds on Nov. 7 with great success. The contest is designed to develop public speaking skills and teams are judged on their spoken word and enthusiasm. Sonoma Valley High’s Advanced team received a bronze award; the Novice Yellow team received a silver award, with Daniela Chairez and Maribel Campos receiving outstanding individual awards; the Novice Blue team achieved gold, with Nicola Brennan and Arieanna Allen receiving outstanding individual awards.

The school’s Chapter Officer team also received a gold and the outstanding president in the entire contest was senior Alexandra Kasper. The Freshmen Team Fuji won first place in the Best Informed Greenhand Contest (aimed at understanding the aims, purposes, history, and structure of the local, state, and national FFA student organizations). The students competed against other freshmen in the county by taking a test to measure their knowledge of FFA and agriculture. Freshmen Andrea Robledo was named third in individual competition and Stephanie Castello came in second. Pictured is the entire Sonoma High contingent that competed in the event.
