Mexico is sending some of its citizens to work on the railroads in this vicinity. They will arrive in Sonoma on a special NWP car today and will be quartered in the two-story stone building near the railroad right-of-way. The building has been renovated and furnished by the company to accommodate the employees. … R. Monson who has successfully conducted a drug store in Sonoma for several years past is removing his stock and fixtures to Marin City where he will establish a pharmacy for the populous war work center. … A wish of the former loved Señora Vallejo Emparan was announced the day following her death when a visitor from old Mexico arrived in Sonoma to tell of the old Vallejo piano that had been located. Long years ago it was taken to Mexico City by one of the family who later died there.

(From the I-T of Aug. 1, 1947)

Close to 250 persons are employed at the Valley Canning Company here as the canning of Elberta Peaches enters the second week. A second shift of 125 employees augmented the regular day crew of approximately the same number beginning yesterday and the two shifts are expected to carry on right through the canning season. … Mayor August Pinelli announced yesterday that a well-known well-drilling firm is this week working at the famed Lacrhyma Montis spring, developing the capacity water supply which the spring gave to the city before it went dry recently. Installation of a turbine pump which the city had on hand is being mad with an ample water supply being assured pumping from a new 30-foot depth. …Sonoma’s new dial telephone system will be placed in service tomorrow night, Aug. 2 at 9 p.m. In making the announcement, W. B. Turner, telephone company manager, said installation of the dial switching equipment has been completed and final testing of lines and central office apparatus is being made by telephone technicians in preparation for the cutover hour.

Mother Nature took a hand in the highly controversial El Verano bridge-building project last week, slowing up operations at the site until funds could be authorized for needed, but unforeseen, pile driving. It was a miscalculation as to the depth at which a solid base for the pilings could be reached which caused the supervisors to authorize an additional $3,000 to the construction cost of $43,000. … By official resolution the Sonoma City Council on Wednesday night moved that the Gen. H. H. Arnold model airplane collection be displayed in either the city hall or city library – whichever is acceptable to the general – and asked the Kiwanis Club committee to carry on the future development of the display. … After helping to alleviate the critical apple situation, the government is now giving aid to a avert a similar crisis with pears. According to a Sonoma Valley Packing Plant spokesman, the canneries are buying only a fourth of the pears this year. They are paying $30 a ton to the growers whereas last year’s record price as $115 a ton. … George Koltanowski, world-famous chess player and champion of the world in blindfold chess, will perform in the Sonoma Plaza Sunday starting at 1:30 p.m. This will be an open air exhibition, free to the public and kibitzers. All Sonoma Valley chess players are urged to participate.
