Raimundo Faustino Azevedo

Raimundo Faustino Azevedo, 72, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, in Sonoma, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Raimundo was born to Manuel Faustino Azevedo and Rosalina Conceição on Dec. 5, 1939, in Sao Jorge Island, Azores, Portugal, the youngest of six children. After serving his country in the Angolan war, he returned home to marry LaSalette, the neighbor girl who had caught his eye. In 1968, he sold his worldly possessions, a pair of oxen and a milk cow, and moved his wife and his two sons, Manuel and Luis, to Healdsburg. He later had a daughter, Lucia, and another son, William.  The family eventually settled in Sonoma Valley in 1976.

He is survived by his wife and four children and his daughters-in-law, Kimberley (Manuel) and Allison (William); son-in-law, Tracy (Lucia), as well as four beautiful, granddaughters, Kailey, Emily, Natalie and Nazaré. He is also survived by his sister, Maria Solomé and many nieces and nephews in Sao Jorge, Azores, and his brother, Jose Azevedo, and his family in Canada, and many nieces and nephews in California.

Raimundo, known to many as “Ray,” worked as a dairyman for many years before retiring. He was a true green thumb and loved tending to his beautiful garden as well as maintaining the grounds at LaSalette Restaurant. He enjoyed sitting down for a good meal with his family, his daily walks along the bike path, and pampering his beloved cat, Tigger, who preceded him in death by two weeks after being a loyal companion for 14 years.

The family wishes to thank Hospice By The Bay for their care and support during this difficult time. Donations can be made to IDESST Sausalito Portuguese Hall Children’s fund in his name.

Visitation on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Duggan’s Mission Chapel, with a 7 p.m. vigil service. Funeral Mass on Friday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, with entombment at St. Francis Cemetery immediately following.
