Panthers pounce on Sonoma
Dragon boy cagers playing Eureka Tourney
For the young Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys, their preseason nonleague struggles continued on Monday and they’re still seeking their first win of the current 2012-13 season.
Another case of a slow early start by the visiting Dragons, who only have one senior on their roster, put them into a substantial 19-9 first-quarter hole and, after Santa Rosa doubled its scoring output along with an extra point for a 39-22 halftime advantage, then cruised to a 60-33 win.
Pacing cold-shooting Sonoma, which didn’t have one double-digit scorer, was junior Jesse Summers with seven points.
The varsity Dragon boys are currently competing in the annual Eureka Tournament, having played Arcata in last night’s opener – results not available at presstime – with the tourney continuing tonight and ending tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 15.
Sonoma returns home to host nonleague San Marin next Friday, Dec. 21, in Pfeiffer Gym, before the varsity boy cagers compete in the annual, and challenging, Marin Catholic Tournament in Kentfield from Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Dec. 29.
The freshman hoops Dragons dropped a 45-34 road decision to Santa Rosa, paced by Edwin Reyes’ 10 points and five steals; and Max Yankovich’s eight rebounds.
