Purdue University’s head diving coach, Adam Soldati, who grew up in Sonoma and dove for Sonoma Valley High School, reports that the food in London’s Olympic Village is great. Soldati coaches David Boudia, who won bronze in the men’s synchronized diving with Nick McCrory.
Soldati, 38, attended Santa Rosa Junior College and then got a full scholarship to dive for Indiana University.
His mother, Carol Soldati said, “He was playing football, basketball and baseball at the high school.” Then someone installed a diving board at the then-high school pool. “When he came home and told us he was going to dive, we thought brain damage had set in. We have always told our boys we would stand behind them 100 percent in whatever they wanted to do. I looked at my husband and said there goes any scholarships. Boy was I wrong!”
Adam bunked in the Olympic Village this time while his wife, Kimiko, and children stayed with friends in London.
Adams says the food is “outstanding. Imagine that it is a cafeteria that can feed 10,000 people, so it is big! There are lots of choices … American, Asian, African and of course a big section of British specialties. I am trying not to gain 20 pounds so I eat pretty simple. Lots of salads and Greek yogurt with fruit. And I am a lover of pizza, so I sneak a piece of that in most of my meals. They have some outstanding sourdough pancakes that I have really enjoyed.”
When I asked about the origins of his pizza passion, Adam admitted that he developed his taste at Mary’s Pizza Shack.

Try not to miss the next hilarious episode of live 1940s radio show “Duffy’s Tavern” to be performed at Murphy’s Irish Pub Sunday and Monday, Aug. 26 and 27. Bill O’Neal, Chris Mueller and Tom Wright and I went to the last show and it was pound-the-table funny, whether you remember the original show or not.
Sharron Simpson directs Julia Maffei Holsworth, Rich Holsworth, Sherril Peterson, Jeremy Berrick and Carson Campbell with perfect accents and use of stand-up mics. According to Chris Mueller, most of the show was recorded in Puerto Rico where writer Ed Gardner had fled from taxes. San Quentin inmates voted “Duffy’s Tavern” their favorite radio show. Glen Ellen opera singer Jill Wagoner hammed it up during “intermission.”
The $35 admission includes dinner with salad and a glass of wine or beer. Such a deal. Reserve at 815-6159 or sharronsimpson@comcast.net.
