Men’s Jack Benny hoops tips off new season
Heffernan eyes 3-peat, R&B, Patt’s, Murphy’s, La Salette, Carys’s
Two weeks into the Sonoma Valley Men’s Recreational Basketball’s Jack Benny (39-and-over) Sunday Night League’s 2012-13 regular season, two-time defending champion Heffernan Insurance Brokers is looking to make it a title three-peat, but has already been saddled with a loss.
Both Patt’s Copy World and La Salette are off to 2-0 starts, with Heffernan and Murphy’s Irish Pub holding 1-1 records after splitting their first two games, while R&B Custom Builders and Cary’s Sports Bar and Grill are winless with 0-2 records each.
In Sunday’s, Nov. 18, second week of action at the Altimira Middle School gym, Patt’s Copy World toppled R&B Custom Builders 58-48, led by Dave Studdert’s 21 points, Mike Mertens’ 15, Mike Brennan’s 12, Mark Fidler’s eight and Scott Summers’ two. R&B was paced by Al Martinson’s game-high 27 points with six treys, Ron Hall’s 10, Larry Philpot’s seven, and Jim Happ and Gary MacKinnon’s two apiece.
La Salette defeated Cary’s Sports Bar and Grill 48-31, led by Don Conley’s game-high-tying 16 points, Aaron Smith’s 13, Aaron Locks’ 12 with four treys, John Reed’s three and Mike Glasbrenner and Don Coddington’s two each. Pacing Cary’s were Jared Nethaway’s game-high-tying 16 points, Chris Rossi’s eight, Matt Ingersoll’s five and AJ Armanini’s two.
Heffernan Insurance Brokers beat Murphy’s Irish Pub 51-43, led by Joe Neely and Kevin Jaggie’s game-high 15 points each, Devin Ajax’s eight, Brian Stephenson’s five and Pete Ahern and Jerome Baker’s four apiece. The Pub was paced by Beni Comma’s 11 points with three treys, Eric Jorgensen’s eight, Jamie Svanda and Carlos Hernandez’s seven each, Rich Tunheim and Steve Mellinger’s four apiece, and John Malinkowski’s two.

On opening night, Nov. 11, Murphy’s Irish Pub edged R&B Custom Builders 39-35, led by Tunheim’s game-high 12 points, Dan Sooter’s eight, Comma and Jorgensen’s seven each, and Malinkowski’s five. Pacing the Builders were Martinson’s 11 points with three treys, Hall’s 10, Philpot’s eight, and two apiece by MacKinnon, Ron Luddy and Danny Dwyer.
Patt’s Copy World upended Cary’s Sports Bar and Grill 51-31, led by Tim Lilly’s game-high 31 points with five treys, Studdert’s 10, Mertens’ five, Fidler’s three and Summers’ two. Cary’s was paced by Gary Johnson’s 13 points, Rossi’s 11, Jason Campbell’s three and Joe Kirkwood and Jay Ashe’s two each.
La Salette trimmed Heffernan Insurance Brokers 45-42, led by Smith’s game-high 21 points, John Barr’s eight, Conley’s seven, Coddington’s three, and two apiece by Reed, Glasbrenner and Kenton Lewis. Pacing Heffernan were Baker’s 17 points with five treys, Neely’s 17, Stephenson’s five and Ahern’s three.
