Mary Jane ‘Janie’ Barber

Mary Jane “Janie” Barber, 88, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2012, in Sonoma.

  Mary Jane was born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Mineral Point, Wisc., to Charles and Kathryn Colleran. She was the second of three Colleran children. Raised in Minnesota, Mary Jane graduated from Loretto High School in Caledonia. While her brother William went to college and then enlisted in the Navy, she and her mother and sister Patricia followed their father to Long Beach, during World War II. While working as a “Rosie the Riveter” at Douglas aircraft she met her future husband William “Bill” Barber. Once the war was over “Janie” and Bill were married at St. Anthony’s in Long Beach on Nov. 22, 1945.?

  Mary Jane was always active in giving service to her church and community. She was an active member of St. Dominic Savio in Bellflower, and in 1988 moved to Sonoma where she continued her work at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She was a part of several Sonoma activities including Questors and was active in women’s guild, Hibernians and a volunteer at the Church Mouse. She loved Sonoma and made many wonderful friends here.

  Mary Jane is survived by her husband, Bill; sister, Patricia Radomski; children, Catherine, Charles and John; grandchildren, Jeff, William, Hannah, Erin, Allisa, Delia and Cami; and her great-granddaughter, Annabelle. She is also survived by many loved nieces, nephews and godchildren.?

  Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, 660 W. Agua Caliente Road, Sonoma, CA 95476.

  Inurnment immediately following Mass at Mountain Cemetery – Veterans Memorial Section, 90 First St. W., Sonoma, CA 95476. Arrangements and services handled by Duggan’s Mission Chapel, Mission Cremation Service, 525 W. Napa St., Sonoma, CA 95476.
