In a pressure-packed and pivotal three-game Sonoma County League week, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls bounced back from another frustrating loss to SCL-undefeated first-place power Casa Grande at home on Monday by soundly defeating league foe Windsor on the road Wednesday.

Taking center stage for the Lady Dragons in both games was senior Annie Studdert, who backed up a stellar 19-point, 10-rebound effort in the 48-38 loss to Casa in Pfeiffer Gym, with a dominating double-double of 18 points and 19 rebounds in fueling the 51-34 triumph at Windsor.

The Sonoma girls wrap up the challenging three games in five days by hosting Analy tonight in Pfeiffer Gym, with the freshmen starting at 4:30, the junior varsity playing at 6, and the varsity tipping off at 7:30 p.m.

In beating Windsor, the Lady Dragons jumped out to a solid 13-5 first-quarter lead, turned it into a 26-14 halftime advantage, then pulled away for good with a 16-8 third-quarter run.

Sonoma was led by Studdert’s game-high 19 rebounds and 18 points to go with four assists; senior Jersey Witous’ eight points and shutdown defensive play; junior Ashley Vail’s five points and four rebounds; senior Emily Edwards’ five rebounds, four points and two steals; senior Karly Burningham’s and junior Kendall Ashe’s five points each; senior Anna Stewart’s four points; and senior Ari Schill’s three rebounds and two points.

Against Casa Grande, it was a déjà-vu midgame scenario for the Lady Dragons, which resulted in a game-changing momentum that didn’t go their way.

The first time they played in Petaluma, Sonoma managed to overcome nine turnovers with an 11-6 second-quarter run to take an 18-13 halftime lead, but ended up fading in the second-half and eventually falling 48-37 to the Gaucho girls.

In Monday evening’s SCL rematch, the Lady Dragons used a 10-5 second-quarter run to hold a slim 21-20 halftime advantage, but, again, got overrun 22-8 by Casa.

Pacing Sonoma were Studdert’s double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals; Witous’ six rebounds and four points; Edwards’ six points; Vail’s five rebounds and two points; Ashe’s three points and three rebounds; Burningham’s three rebounds and two points; and junior Ali Romano’s two points.
