Having played both tough preseason and Sonoma County League regular-season and tournament schedules, which left them with a 13-14 overall record and 6-6 in the SCL, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity basketball girls did post a winning 6-4 mark in their division, which qualified them for more postseason play.

At Sunday’s North Coast Section Division-3 seeding meeting, the Lady Dragons were made the ninth-seed, but a change late Monday afternoon gave the Lady Dragons the eighth-seed and with it, a home game. They'll host ninth-seeded Hercules (14-12 in the ACCAL) tonight at 7 p.m. in Pfeiffer Gym.

Comprising the postseason Lady Dragons – directed by head coach Sil Coccia and assistant coaches Steve Semenero and Dino Minatta – are seniors Annie Studdert, Jersey Witous, Ari Schill, Karly Burningham, Anna Stewart, Lindsey Stewart and Emily Edwards; juniors Ashley Vail, Kendall Ashe, Ali Romano, Caroline Knef and Halli Dobson; and, brought up from the junior varsity, sophomore Samantha Richards and freshman Mackenzie Albrecht.

Sonoma’s overall record improved from 12-15 to 13-14 when it picked up a forfeit win over nonleague Northgate because of an ineligable player.

Sunday evening, the SCL named its all-league teams for both the girls and boys, with four Sonoma players being honored.

Senior Annie Studdert, the Lady Dragons’ leading scorer and rebounder, as well as one of the best players in the Redwood Empire, was a unanimous SCL first-team all-league selection.

Receiving SCL all-league honorable mention recognition were Sonoma girls’ senior defensive standout Jersey Witous, and the Dragon boys’ jaw-dropping long-distance shooting specialist senior Gene Truong, and hard-playing post player junior Vince Bruton.
