In a pair of upbeat performances, the Sonoma Valley High School girls’ tennis and varsity soccer teams were the ones pounding the drums toward decisive and defense-oriented Sonoma County League conclusions, respectively.
On Tuesday, the Sonoma tennis girls netters hosted new SCL member-school, Elsie Allen, at the high school courts and spring-boarded off big wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles by senior Anna Robles and sophomore Cecilia Montano, respectively, to a resounding 7-0 shutout victory.
After Robles edged Elizabeth Pham 6-4, 6-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and Montano blanked Amie Huynh 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, the Lady Dragon winners included junior Stephanie Brett’s 6-1, 6-1 over Annie Huynh at No. 3 singles; junior Michelle Stovall’s 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Maria Soto at No. 4 singles; senior Francesca Stornaiuolo’s and sophomore Annie Morgan’s 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Maria Soto and Channy Kim at No. 1 doubles; seniors Regina Mellinger’s and Raquel Rios-Gomez’s 6-1, 6-0 downing of Hannah Diaz and Ana Diaz at No. 2 doubles; and senior Jessica Marioni’s and sophomore Hanna Lemaire’s 6-0, 6-0 victory over Lissete Vega and Monica Corrillo at No. 3 doubles.
Winning their exhibition match for the Sonoma netters, who played at league foe Healdsburg yesterday – results not available at presstime – were sophomore Brooke Slack and freshman Brenda Maldonado.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls traveled to Forestville on Wednesday for an SCL encounter with El Molino and turned in another stalwart defensive performance in posting a 1-0 victory.
Anchoring the Lady Dragons’ shutdown, shutout effort behind sophomore goalie Christen Silkey was junior center-defender Maria Hawing, with, for the second SCL match in a row, senior Caroline Knef scoring what would be the winning goal late in the first-half.

Sonoma’s varsity soccer boys must feel as if they’ve been snake-bit in their past three SCL matches that all ended in losses either in the final minutes of regulation play, or in overtime, which is what happened in their latest league match.
On Tuesday in Forestville, the Dragons battled to a 1-0 halftime lead over El Molino on junior Alejandro Echeverria’s scored goal off an assist from senior Manny Young.
In the second half, the Lions managed to sneak in the tying goal, which sent the match into overtime, where Echeverria scored his second goal for Sonoma, this one assisted by junior Andy Chavez.
But El Molino not only matched the Dragons’ goal, they tallied a second one for a 3-2 win.
