Lady Dragons golf, tennis beat Piner

Sonoma spikers top Petaluma, play Concord Tourney

In Sonoma County League home and road matches on Tuesday, both the Sonoma Valley High School girls’ golf and tennis teams, respectively, registered a pair of victories over Piner.

For the Lady Dragon golfers, they posted a 308 score in their SCL win over an incomplete Piner squad at the Sonoma Golf Club course, led by senior medalist Jordann Dagner’s nine-hole round of 49, senior Allison Cogbill’s 56, freshman Callie Hogan’s 65, senior Barbara Hodgkinson’s 67, sophomore Paige Knef’s 71.

The Sonoma netters played at SCL foe Elsie Allen yesterday – results not available at presstime – and will host league rival Petaluma in their regular season finale this Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Sonoma Golf Club.

The tennis Lady Dragons traveled to Santa Rosa and improved their upbeat SCL second-place record to 5-2 with a runaway 6-1 triumph over Piner.

Winning their matches for Sonoma were sophomore Cecilia Montano’s 6-0, 6-3 over Kristen Soy at No. 2 singles; junior Stephanie Brett’s 6-2, 6-2 over May Liang at No. 3 singles; junior Michelle Stovall’s 6-2, 6-0 over Jessica Menan at No. 4 singles; junior Brooke Slack’s and sophomore Annie Morgan’s 6-2, 6-1 over Natalie Silva and Andrea Merg at No. 1 doubles; junior Ava Gonzales’ and freshman Brenda Maldonado’s 6-0, 6-3 over Nicole Aquino and Laura Castro at No. 2 doubles; and sophomores Hanna Lemaire’s and Madison Kellyey’s 6-2, 6-4 over Gaby Prieda and Sinasm Phoung at No. 3 doubles.

Sustaining Sonoma’s lone loss was senior Anna Robles, who droipped a 1-6, 0-6 decision to strong No. 1 singles player Vickey Nguyen.

In exhibition matches for Sonoma, junior Haley Glasner and sophomores Lily Shahoian and Stephanie Angulo were victorious.

The Lady Dragon netters, who played at league rival Petaluma yesterday – results not available at presstime – will host SCL foe Analy this Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the high school courts.

Sonoma’s defending co-champion varsity volleyball girls defeated longtime SCL rival Petaluma 25-11, 25-14, 26-28 and 26-24 last week in Pfeiffer Gym before competing in the Concord Tournament on Saturday and winning their bracket, but finishing in overall ninth-place.

In the tourney’s pool-play, the Lady Dragons topped Freedom 25-16, 25-10; fell to Lowell 14-25, 18-25; downed Deer Valley 25-16, 25-12; and lost to Las Lomas 12-25, 15-25.

Sonoma then won its bracket by defeating Washington 25-12, 25-12, and beating Deer Valley in a rematch 25-20, 25-11.

Leading the Lady Dragons past Petaluma were sophomore Anastasia Claros’ 35 digs and two serving aces; sophomore Delaney Swanson’s 18 kills, 14 digs and one assisted block; senior Alexis Long-Am’s 14 digs; sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht’s 12 digs and one solo block; senior Allyson Beckwith’s seven kills and one assisted block; sophomore Kayten Mak’s six kills; and sophomore Ciara Smith’s five solo blocks.

Sonoma hosted SCL foe El Molino last night – results not available at presstime – and will hit the league road for Sebastopol this Tuesday, Oct. 9, to play the other co-champion, Analy.
