After managing to split the first two games of their long current five-game road trip in the wake of back-to-back slow starts, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls were determined to get off to a good start on their third nonleague stop against Drake Tuesday evening in San Anselmo.

While Sonoma accomplished its goal and scored 14 first-quarter points for a one-point lead, it could muster just six in the second period and trailed 24-20 at the half.

But the Lady Dragons returned from the halftime break with a focus on pushing the action, while controlling the tempo through tough defense and productive offense. Three players scored double-digit points, two of them posting double-doubles en route to 34 second-half points for an uplifting 54-43 victory over Drake.

Leading the Sonoma girls were sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht’s 19 points, 12 rebounds and two assists; senior Ali Romano’s 14 points and three rebounds; sophomore Delaney Swanson’s 11 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two assists; senior Kendall Ashe’s five points, four rebounds, four assists and two assists; junior Megan Neely’s three points; junior Gianna Monterosso’s two points, four rebounds and two steals; and senior Ashley Vail’s five rebounds.

The Lady Dragons will wrap up their five-stop preseason nonleague road trip with a pair of challenging East Bay games at Campolindo tonight and Miramonte tomorrow evening, Saturday, Dec. 15.

Sonoma returns home to host Justin-Siena of Napa on Saturday night, Dec. 22, at Pfeiffer Gym, before the varsity girl cagers make a return trek to Arizona for some highly competitive holiday desert hoops.

The varsity Lady Dragons will play in the annual Cactus Jam tournament in Tempe from Wednesday, Dec. 26, through Monday, Dec. 31.
