Spikers are 9th in Fresno; host with tennis

Taking a step closer to successfully defending their Sonoma County League co-title, the first-place Sonoma Valley High School varsity volleyball girls registered another sweeping SCL victory by defeating Healdsburg 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 last Thursday night in Pfeiffer Gym.
Leading the Lady Dragons were sophomore libero Anastasia Claros’ 18 digs and two serving aces; sophomore Delaney Swanson’s 14 kills, two solo blocks and one ace; sophomore Hannah Herrick’s nine kills; sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht’s four kills and one solo block; and sophomore Ciara Smith’s three kills and one solo block.
Tied with Petaluma atop the standings, the young Sonoma spikers travel to Santa Rosa today to face league foe Piner, before returning home to host Elsie Allen in their regular-season home finale at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 18, in Pfeiffer Gym.
Before Thursday’s match, Sonoma will honor its two seniors Allyson Beckwith and Alexis Long-Am.
On Friday and Saturday, the Sonoma varsity girls competed in the challenging Hoover High Tournament in Fresno and posted a 4-1 record, which earned them ninth place out of 20 teams, with their lone loss costing them a chance at the finals.
The Lady Dragons swept Fresno 25-9, 25-9; defeated Madera South 25-17, 25-16; beat Tulare Western 25-16, 25-12; edged Mt. Whitney 23-25, 25-22, 15-9; and fell to Reedley 19-25, 25-18, 12-15.

In girls’ tennis, the Lady Dragons blanked new league foe Elsie Allen 7-0 last Thursday afternoon in Santa Rosa to improve their SCL third-place record to 6-4.
Leading the Sonoma girl netters to their sweeping win were senior Anna Robles’ 6-2, 6-4 over Elizabeth Phom at No. 1 singles; sophomore Cecilia Montano’s 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Amie Huynh at No. 2 singles; senior Francesca Stornaiuolo’s 7-5, 6-3 over Annie Huynh at No. 3 singles; sophomore Annie Morgan’s 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 over Maria Soto at No. 4 singles; juniors Stephanie Brett and Michelle Stovall’s 6-1, 6-0 over Channy Kim and Monica Carillo at No. 1 doubles; seniors Regina Mellinger and Raquel Rios-Gomez’s 6-1, 6-0 over Trinie Le and Hannah Diaz at No. 2 doubles; and juniors Ava Gonzales and Haley Glasner’s 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Ana Diaz and Lissette Vega at No. 1 doubles.
The Lady Dragon netters host Healdsburg at 3:30 p.m. today at the high school courts.
