Lady Dragon cagers outlast Napa
Sonoma girls at Encinal, JVs, frosh sweep
On the heels of two wins, one loss and a third-place finish in their own 17th annual Dragon Classic last weekend in Pfeiffer Gym, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls hit the nonleague road for a long five-game trip on Wednesday and traveled to Napa for their neighborly annual preseason showdown.
The Lady Dragons – with 64-20 and 39-25 Dragon Classic wins over Terra Linda and Northgate, respectively, and a heartbreaking tourney semifinal 41-40 loss to San Marin – trailed an aggressive and attacking Napa team 14-8 after the first quarter, but went on a 15-10 second-quarter run to cut the deficit to one point at the half.
Sonoma’s girl cagers finally took control of the action in the second half, pulling in front by two points after three quarters, then put their offense in high gear, outscoring Napa 19-13 en route to a 57-50 victory.
Leading the Lady Dragons were sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht’s 16 points and nine rebounds; senior Kendall Ashe’s 13 points, six rebounds and five assists; sophomore Delaney Swanson’s 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals; senior Ali Romano’s six points, senior Ashley Vail’s four and sophomore Alexa Hall’s two; and junior Gianna Monterosso’s two points, three rebounds and three assists.
Sonoma’s junior varsity and freshman girls’ teams also beat Napa by 23-22 and 42-14 scores, respectively – complete results not available at presstime.
The Lady Dragons continue their long nonleague road trip tomorrow night, Saturday, Dec. 8, at Encinal in Alameda, before traveling to Marin for a game at Drake this Tuesday evening, Dec. 11.
