Dunbar fifth-graders always produced a Western-themed melodrama

It’s a rite of passage for the fifth graders at Dunbar Elementary School to take part in the annual melodrama during Memorial Day weekend. “Dastardly Deeds at Yoursin Mine or Yukon Take it With You,” one of four rotating plays that have graced the outdoor Haver Stage at Dunbar School for the past 20 spring semesters, will show at 6 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 25 to 27.

It is a full-scale production of a western-style melodramatic plot complete with crazy sound effects, lovable and despicable characters, full hair and makeup, traditional sets and period costumes (some of which may have been around the full 20 years).

This year’s story unfolds in the tiny gold-mining town of Chilcoot Pass and as in any rural hamlet most of the action and gossip happens in the local saloon. Originally written/adapted, directed and produced by the Fridell family, the plays have been directed by Kate Kennedy for the past 10 years. A team of school staff and parent volunteers assist in the process.

Doors and the concession stand open each night at 5 p.m. Tickets are available at the venue and are $10 for adult and $5 for children, with a family corral package for $25 for two adults and two kids. Seating is picnic style with blankets and low-chairs encouraged. This is family-friendly outdoor entertainment at its best.

In celebration of the 20th production, there will be a western-style gala barbecue on Saturday beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Glen Ellen Fire Department will be helping to grill and plate dinners will be available for $10.

Dunbar alumni are encouraged to attend this historic set of performances where, as always, they'll be asked to stand up and shout out the play they were in, which year, and the character they played.

The school continues to accept direct donations, raffle items and concession supplies in support of this year’s play. To donate, email shannonlee@me.com or call 996-3352.
