How to ruin a town

Sep 20, 2012 - 03:59 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

Highway 12 is a major connection between Highway 80 and 101. The Jamison Canyon section is now being expanded to handle this ever-increasing traffic.

For cars not using Highway 116, a single-lane road that serves Petaluma and points north, downtown Sonoma is a major chokepoint, which has been further constricted by converting Fifth Street West to single lanes in order to favor a few bicycles.

Now a hotel complex is planned with more than 100 parking places.

Car exiting will spill out onto Second Street West or West Napa Street. In what direction can they go?

Very few. Cars entering this complex will back up traffic on West Napa Street. Does the city and state have a plan on how to handle this mess? Back when it was possible, the city didn’t plan for a by-pass around the downtown. This lack of foresight should not be forgotten. Do not compound these mistakes.
