Gorin is best for environment

Oct 11, 2012 - 04:23 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

Voters should be aware of some of the important environmental issues that will come before the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors in the next four years. These need to be considered when deciding whether to support Susan Gorin or John Sawyer  for 1st District Supervisor.

The long-term adequacy of clean water will be an increasingly important issue when considering expanding development, growing population, the need to protect watersheds, agricultural preservation and climate change.

There will be challenges finding funds to manage state and county parks and to open new parks on lands owned by the Open Space District. The future of the Sonoma Developmental Center may affect the beautiful open space on its property.  There will be opportunities to protect properties along the Sonoma Coast and to open new trails for the county’s citizens who cherish healthy recreation, walking, biking and riding in natural beauty.

Endorsements from the Sierra Club, the nation’s senior environmental organization, and Sonoma County Conservation Action, the only county organization that rates candidates’ environmental records, are evidence that Susan Gorin is the candidate with the experience and the lifetime values to be able to intelligently address all these issues.

Many other environmental organizations cannot endorse candidates because of their tax-exempt status, but their members can, and a look at Susan’s website (susangorin.com) reveals scores have done just that. A vote for Susan is a vote for the preservation of the county’s natural resources, scenic beauty and outdoor recreation facilities.
