God bless the people of Sonoma

Valley forum

On behalf of my brothers, David, Sam, Walt and Bill, and myself, I would like to thank the people of Sonoma for their outpouring of comfort and support since the tragic loss of our uncle, Alvin Hesse on Nov. 7.

I would especially like to thank the Sonoma police department, the emergency responders and the hospital personnel for doing all they could on that fateful night. As a family, we know that everything possible was done to help my uncle and sustain his life. I would also like to thank the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office and the Victims Advocate’s Office for their help and support during this time. Everyone has been so kind and supportive.

My uncle was very close to our family and will be deeply missed. He was my mother, Glenna’s, only living sibling. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. Yes, age was taking its toll on his body – he could not walk very far so he used his motorized wheelchair to get around. But mentally he was sharp and continued to strive to learn and grow. He loved his independence and getting out each week to visit others in Sonoma.

When he was 90, my brothers and I gave him a laptop computer which he loved to use on a daily basis. He learned to surf the net and set up an email account and a Facebook page. He didn’t shy away from new technology but embraced it, with an eagerness to learn and grow. I received emails from him weekly, the last one being on the night before his death.

He is in heaven now with my mother, his parents, and other siblings. Our prayer as a family is that good will come from this terrible tragedy.

God bless you Sonoma.
