Frances Compagno

Frances Compagno was born in Fresno, to Ruth I. Pitts and Joseph L. Dickson, and was raised in San Francisco. She passed away peacefully at her home in Sonoma on Feb. 6, only days after her 88th birthday.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Douglas (1988); and is survived by her sons, James Westly, Joseph, Richard and Robert; by grandchildren, Bethany Hahn, Elisa Compagno, Iva Compagno, Devon Compagno and Christopher Compagno; and by great-grandchildren, Tristan Hahn and Wyatt Hahn.

Fran and Doug moved to Sonoma with the two older boys in 1952. Fran purchased a yardage shop, which she operated for several years. The shop doubled as the Western Union office, and she had many stories of the famous, and infamous, people who came to send or receive telegrams. Along the way, she brought two more sons into the family. She worked part time at the Sonoma Index Tribune while raising her boys and then worked for a urologist and then as a receptionist for a local orthodontist before retiring. She was very involved in the Parent Organizations at El Verano Elementary, Flowery Junior High, the new Altimira Middle School and Sonoma Valley High School. She was also a founding member of the Sonoma Lions Club.

Fran will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Memorial donations in Fran’s name should be made to your favorite charity.

Any who would like to join her family in a celebration of her life are welcome to come to her home on Sunday, Feb. 12, between 3 and 6 p.m.
