Sonoma hosting annual preseason grid scrimmage; ‘Rush’ ends today
Danny Banales takes a water-break during a football-practice session as workouts for the 2012 season began on Monday for Sonoma Valley High School’s fall sports programs. The football Dragons are preparing for their annual preseason scrimmage with visiting Santa Rosa next Friday, Aug. 17, at Arnold Field.
Today ends the first week of the earliest preseason workout-start ever for Sonoma Valley High School fall sports, and, while most of Sonoma’s autumn athletic programs start their official practice sessions next week, the varsity and junior varsity football teams began on Monday and are already in full-practice mode.
Along with football – with the freshman gridders starting practice this Monday, Aug. 13 – Sonoma’s fall sports programs include girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ cross country, boys’ and girls’ water polo and girls’ tennis and golf.
Any student-athlete wanting to participate in Sonoma’s 2012 fall sports programs needs to have all her or his paperwork – including current mandatory physical examinations, proof of insurance, completed emergency cards, signed (student and parent) code of conduct forms and paid fees – completed before practicing.
Forms for athletic participation are available from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the SVHS student activities office until this Wednesday, Aug. 15, when the school year begins and the office will be open until 3:30 p.m.
Paperwork, paid fees and proof of physical for all Sonoma fall athletes can be turned in at the student activities office or during Sonoma’s “Rush” program, which concludes today.
The Dragons’ varsity and jayvee football teams continue their 2012 daily preseason double-session workouts from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., in preparation for their annual preseason scrimmages (jayvees at 6, varsity at 7:30 p.m.) with visiting Santa Rosa next Friday, Aug. 17, at Arnold Field.
The volleyball Lady Dragons will hold double-day tryout sessions from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m for the varsity, jayvee and frosh teams on Schantz Track and in Pfeiffer Gym both this Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 13 and 14, and from 4 to 6 p.m. on school-opening Wednesday, Aug. 15.
Tryouts for the jayvees and frosh are from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, with the varsity taking the court from 6 to 8 p.m.
On Friday, Aug. 17, there will be a 6:30 p.m. mandatory meeting in the Pavilion for all the girls who made the squads and their parents.
The Lady Dragon spikers will scrimmage Casa Grande and Vintage on Tuesday, Aug. 21, and Thursday, Aug. 23, respectively, before the varsity team participates in the annual Napa Jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Sonoma’s cross country boys’ and girls’ teams will hold two practice sessions at 3:45 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 13 and 14, at the Maxwell Farms Regional Park course, before holding daily 3:30 p.m. workouts at SVHS, meeting near Golton Hall.
