This Friday, Aug. 24, will mark two beginnings for Sonoma Valley High School football – the openings for both the 2012 season, and the 29th, and final year under the knowledgeable, consistent and successful direction of varsity head coach Mick O’Meara and defensive coordinator Mike Mulas.
Holding true to a decision as longtime coaching allies and close friends made at the end of last season (2011), O’Meara and Mulas – who both got to co-coach each other’s all-league standout sons on the gridiron – reitorrated at Friday’s scrimmage at Arnold Field that 2012 would be their final year directing the Dragons.
For nearly three decades, O’Meara and Mulas fused their experience and work-ethic into a winning formula for Sonoma, which includes a 167-131-6 overall record, eight Sonoma County League titles (five outright, three tied), 17 postseason North Coast Section appearances and an NCS second-place banner (1990).
Sonoma’s final season under O’Meara and Mulas begins this Friday with the 2012 season opener against visiting nonleague Redwood at 7:30 p.m. under the Arnold Field lights.
