JULIA FELD COMES on board as the Sonoma Community Center’s newest artist in residence, where she will live, work and offer classes.

After significant thought and examination, the Sonoma Community Center announced that ceramicist Julia Feld will be its incoming artist in residence. The public is invited to meet the artist at a reception at on Friday, Jan. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Originally from Russia, Feld holds a bachelor’s of fine arts from San Jose State and a master of fine arts from the University of Cincinnati, in Ohio. A talented ceramic artist, she is known for her painterly narratives that enliven three-dimensional ceramic objects and create illusions of interchangeable realities.

This winter, Feld will teach an eight-week class at the center entitled “Sculpture for All Levels” on Fridays from Jan. 25 to March 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Focusing on sculptural and vessel forms, Feld will share insights into hand building techniques including coil construction, pinching and slabs. Her class will also incorporate majolica and underglazing, techniques for surface decoration that characterize her work.

“We’re delighted to welcome Julia as our newest Artist in Residence,” said Arts Education and Program Manager Liz Treacy. “We look forward to the new creative possibilities she brings to the studio.”

Feld’s extensive exhibition record includes shows such as “The Best of American Ceramic Art” in Beijing, China, in 2009; “Beyond the Brickyard” at the Archie Bray Foundation, in Helena, Mont., in 2010; and “Feats of Clay” at the Lincoln Arts and Culture Foundation, in Lincoln, Calif., in 2011. She currently sits on the board of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California.

On Friday, June 7, Feld will exhibit works created during her residency in a month-long show in the center’s Gallery 212.
