SONOMA RACEWAY’S FINAL major racing event of 2012 will be the new FIA World Touring Car Championship, with its first-ever race on American soil slated for the weekend of Sept. 21 through 23. Also, the 24th season of Wednesday Night Drags continue to run every Wednesday evening through Nov. 14, along with the motorsport of drifting, and the “Top the Cops” program. SONOMA’S ST. FRANCIS Solano’s CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) basketball program for third- through eighth-grade boys’ and girls’ teams is currently holding 2012-13 season registration for all returning and new players. Mandatory evaluation and tryout days are slated for Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30 (one day required), with practices beginning Monday, Oct. 17, and games starting the weekend of Dec. 3. New players need to provide a copy of their birth certificates with their sign-up forms and fees. Cost is $145 for first child and $100 for additional family members. HANNA BOYS CENTER will celebrate its 20th annual Golf and Tennis Classic on two different days, with the tennis tournament, costing $150 a player, taking place on Friday, Sept. 14, at the Silverado Country Club in Napa. The popular golf tourney is being held on Monday, Sept. 24, at the Sonoma Golf Club, with the entry fee being $275 a player and includes green fees, cart, privileges on the driving range, refreshments on the golf course, tee-prizes and the awards ceremony. Check-in starts at 9:30 a.m. and includes a brunch at the Hanna campus, with a shuttle provided to and from the golf course, and the tourney gets underway with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start. SONOMA VALLEY MENTORING Alliance and the Kiwanis Club of Sonoma Plaza will co-host the second annual Golf-A-Thon this Friday, Sept. 7, at the Oakmont Golf Club’s East Course in Santa Rosa, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. There’s no cost for golfers, who are asked to solicit $1,000 in pledges, which are considered a donation and are 100-percent tax deductible. Golfers, playing in twosomes, will be provided with a cart, boxed lunches and water, and will play as many holes as they can in the one day.
