With a rash of turnovers leading to a 35-14 halftime deficit in the opener of the nonleague portion of their 2012-13 season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball boys outscored perennially big and tough Ukiah in the third quarter and pulled to within 11 points of the visitors midway through the fourth period.
But the Dragons couldn’t sustain their comeback as Ukiah went on a 12-3 run to end the game with a 67-47 win Saturday night in Pfeiffer Gym.
Pacing Sonoma were junior Jesse Summers’ 18 points, four rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot; senior Vince Bruton’s 10 points and eight rebounds; junior Vincent Albano’s seven points and five steals; sophomore Alex Gustafson’s five points, five rebounds and three steals; sophomore Cyle Gusse’s five points; junior Jack Murphy’s two points and three rebounds; sophomore Tristan Mertens’ three assists and two steals; and sophomore Trevor Welch’s three rebounds and a block.
Rounding out the Sonoma boys’ roster – directed by head coach Dennis Housman and assistant coaches Drue Jacobs, Pete Livingston, Sal Chavez and Casey Moll – are juniors Dario Minatta and Matt Robinson.
The Dragons host Albany tonight in Pfeiffer Gym, with the freshmen starting at 4:30, the junior varsity playing at 6, and the varsity tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
