In their fourth and final nonleague game before opening Sonoma County League play, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity football boys were coming off a thrilling 41-39 win over San Marin, were now facing a formidable foe, not only on the road, but also on its homecoming.
Hoping to get the jump on American Canyon’s high-powered offense and stout and stingy defense, the Dragons got an early opportunity when they forced a fumble on the host’s first drive, with senior Keenan Tuohy making the recovery in the middle of the field. Unfortunately, Tuohy, along with junior Austin Bailey, would leave the game with injuries.
But on Sonoma’s first play, junior quarterback Dan Deely, who was coming off an outstanding performance against San Marin, had the ball slip his grasp while passing and it was intercepted.
Then the speedy Wolves were back in business and, going on the offensive, scored five straight touchdowns to hold a commanding 35-0 halftime lead. With their strong-up-front defense continually pressuring Deely and smothering Sonoma, the Wolves went on to win by a 45-0 final score.
The Dragons (2-2 nonconference record) will next open their SCL season against title-favorite Analy in Sebastopol this Friday night, Sept. 21, and, following a bye, they will host the league’s new member-school, Piner, for their homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 5, at Arnold Field.
