There’s still an estatic glow radiating from the Sonoma Valley High School girls’ tennis team in the wake of their strong play at the recent postseason Sonoma County League singles and doubles tournaments on the Izzy Derkos courts at the Santa Rosa Junior College, which produced a championship duo.

Junior teammates Michelle Stovall and exchange student Stephanie Brett paired up for a memorable run through the league doubles tourney that culminated in the Lady Dragons’ twosome winning the SCL doubles title, which is the first championship in five years for Sonoma head coach Mary Kate Dreyer.

By claiming the SCL doubles crown, Sonoma’s Stovall and Brett, who is from Germany, earned an automatic berth in the North Coast Section Division 3 championships, which begin today at the Diamond Hills courts in Oakley.

While Stovall and Brett battled through a tough field of opponents to capture their league title, four other Lady Dragons turned in solid efforts and all posted wins before being eliminated.

In SCL singles, Sonoma sophomore Cecilia Montano was victorious in the opening-round and quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals, while teammate senior Anna Robles won her first-round match before dropping the quarterfinal.

Sonoma junior Ava Gonzales and sophomore Annie Morgan paired up for SCL doubles and also won in the opening-round, but came up short in their quarterfinal match.
