Don’t turn home into tasting room
Valley forum
I’m sure the Index-Tribune reports on changes to historic buildings in our town and is most likely aware of the proposal for 143 W. Spain St. and the attached vacant lot on Church Street.
I want to strongly express my disapproval and dismay at the plan to change the use of the historic home, Casa Castaneda at 143 W. Spain St., to offices and a wine tasting facility. I recall reading an article when the current owners acquired the property that no changes could be made to the structure. I’m sure the past owners never dreamed it would be a wine tasting facility.
Even more strongly do I protest the use of the vacant lot behind 133 Church St. for parking. Church Street is entirely residential, and in several homes, the occupants have young children. The occupant at 148 Church St., the home next door to the proposed parking lot, has a legal childcare license so at times there are many small children in the vicinity. The alleyway that connects Church Street to Spain Street is only one car wide, which means much of the traffic will have to use Church Street for entrance and exit. It is already difficult enough with Steiner’s parking that is accessed through Church Street.
As I write this letter, my two young grandsons are visiting my home on Church Street for several days. This plan feels like a dangerous intrusion to a lovely residential neighborhood full of young children.
I hope the Index-Tribune will report all sides of this story so the general public is aware of the proposed changes.
