Cook Vineyard Weekly Newsletter 7.9.12

Jul 9, 2012 - 10:22 AM

This year is continuing to be one for the history books. Our spring time was almost picture perfect when it came to great wine grape growing weather; combined with the mild temperatures during bloom our crops are looking great.

This week there are predicted highs in the 90’s which will help mature our crop. The past few seasons we have encountered much cooler summers which delayed our harvest.

So if this continues will we be seeing an early harvest?

The answer is yes. The Winkler scale that measures heat units on a day to day basis proves that the more warm weather we have this time of year will equate into an early harvest.

We at CVM are viticulturists not fortune tellers, but if we had to guess we would say that harvest may be a couple weeks earlier than the last few seasons.

This would be great news for our industry since one of the biggest fears during harvest is not being ripe before the rainy season. Last year we began harvesting Chardonnay on the 27th of September, This year we may be starting on the 15th of September.
