Community center hosts artist-in-residence

Jan 26, 2012 - 06:23 PM

Continuing in its efforts to support artists in the Valley and beyond, the Sonoma Community Center welcomes a new artist in residences, who will live and work at the center for the coming months.

The community is invited to meet the artist, Tyler Nansen, during a welcoming reception on Friday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m., in Gallery 212 in the center.

Nansen is a multi-faceted artist who uses multiple methods of working in clay to create functional and sculptural works that challenge perceptions of traditional ceramics. His unique blend of mixed media and slip casting has earned him a foothold as one of Northern California’s fine young talents in the ceramic arts.

Nansen recently received his bachelor of arts degree from San Francisco State University where he studied with renowned ceramic artists David Karaoka and Jeff Downing. He has taught and studied ceramics locally since 2007.

Nansen will be living at the community center through July. Beginning March 23, he will teach an eight-week class titled “Sculpture at All Levels” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays. An exhibition of the work he creates while in Sonoma will open in the center’s Gallery 212 on June 1.

For more information about the artist in residence program, call Sonoma Community Center at 938-4626, ext. 1, or visit www.sonomacommunitycenter.org. Sonoma Community Center is located at 276 E. Napa St.

Sonoma Community Center exists to enrich the lives of Sonoma Valley residents by fostering a broad range of cultural, educational, and community services and by the preservation of its historic building.
