Claus ‘Red’ Frederick Back

Claus “Red” Frederick Back passed peacefully in Sonoma on Oct. 13, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was 87.

Mr. Back was born in San Francisco on Sept. 7, 1925. He moved to Sonoma from the city eight years ago to be closer to his family.

Mr. Back was a World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He worked for the H.S. Crocker printing company in San Francisco for 42 years.

He was a member of the Masonic Golden Gate Speranza Lodge in San Francisco. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and loved to garden and tinker in his workshop. Mr. Back enjoyed a stiff drink, a good meal and a good laugh.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Back, of Sonoma; brother, Kenneth Back, of Novato; daughter, Linda Back; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Gerri Back; grandchildren, James, Christopher and Jennifer Back; and great-grandson, Caiden Back. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Karlsson.

Private family services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shiners Hospitals for Children.
