‘Carved’ opens at SCC

Dec 6, 2012 - 03:27 PM

Sonoma Community Center will open the exhibiton “Carved,” a display of ceramic works created by the center’s artist-in-residence Bobby Free. The exhibit will open Friday, Dec. 7, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and continues through Dec. 28 in Gallery 212.

“Carved” will feature pottery created during Free’s six-month residency at the center.

“For nearly every piece in the exhibit, I have carved through a layer of colored clay to reveal a contrasting color. The Italian word sgrafitto is often used to describe this technique, but I have always called it carving,” he said.

Originally from Honolulu, Free grew up in Oregon. He graduated from the University of Utah.

The gallery is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. SCC’s artist-in-residence program provides opportunities for self-directed, emerging or established artists. For more details, call 938-4626, ext. 1, or visit sonomacommunitycenter.org.

The center is located at 276 E. Napa St.
