Artist in schools

Each year, the Sonoma Community Center sponsors an eight-week program that brings an expert artist to teach in Sonoma’s schools. In 2012, SCC partnered with San Francisco-based painter and printmaker Marius Starkey (pictured at right) to teach six art classes at Adele Harrison, Altimira and Sonoma Charter Schools. The Artist in the Schools program is designed to introduce students to a professional visiting artist and to creative resources that might otherwise be unavailable to them. All programs address state standards in the visual arts. Starkey brought with him a portable press and through a sequence of lessons, taught the students a variety of hands-on techniques, helping them create their own body of work. SCC and the local production company Images in Motion partnered to create a short film to document the residency, which is now available to view on the SCC website at sonomacommunitycenter.org.
