Date Published: May 3, 2012 - 12:37 PM

Albert (Al) Wellington Kirk III, died April 23, 2010 at San Francisco Veterans Hospital, after a long illness with smoker’s lung. Al was born March 28, 1941, at Alameda County Hospital, to now-deceased parents Dr. Albert W. Kirk Jr, and Rose Headley Hammatt Kirk, of San Francisco and Glen Ellen.

Al graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1958, and attended Santa Rosa Junior College, as well as San Jose State College. He had many self-taught professions: auto mechanic, boat builder and sailor, sawmill designer and builder, software designer and engineer. He lived for several years in Canada, and lately in Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by adopted daughter, Katie.

He is survived by brother, Dr. Richard Kirk, of Sonoma; wife, Laura, of Clear Lake; daughters, Jessica, of Washington, Arwen and Becky; and stepchildren, Chris and Yvonne. He is remembered by former wives, Linda, Mary and Josie; and niece, April KirkHart, her spouse, Casey; and grandnieces, Alex Mabel and RubyJo. Also by sister-in-law, Phyliss Kirk; and nephew, Dr. Jason Kirk. Al was noted for his high intellect, creativity, quirky humor and extreme self-reliance.

He loved his children, despite the distances separating them, and the love of his life, wife, Laura. At his request, no memorial will be held, but he will be remembered with all of the emotions possible.

Remembrances can be sent to his brother, Richard, 620 Broadway, Sonoma, CA 95476, and donations to the Foundation For A Smokefree America, at Notobacco.org, to help prevent Al’s cause of death.
