A week of fall Dragon titles
Open field
What a week for Sonoma Valley High School’s 2012 fall sports programs.
Three Sonoma girls’ teams – volleyball, tennis and cross country – captured Sonoma County League title banners to put up in Pfeiffer Gym, while the Dragon football boys gave their retiring longtime coaches Mick O’Meara and Mike Mulas a victorious going-away party by wrapping up their campaign with a five-game SCL win streak for second-place.
On Friday night at Arnold Field, the football Dragons edged SCL rival Petaluma 17-14 after both SVHS and the city of Sonoma honored head coach O’Meara and defensive coordinator Mulas in a pregame ceremony, though it turned out to be only their final home game, with the Dragon gridders earning a trip to the postseason North Coast Section playoffs.
Last Thursday night in Pfeiffer Gym, the volleyball Lady Dragons beat Analy to win their second straight postseason SCL Tournament championships after defeating Petaluma to claim their second consecutive league regular season title the week before, and they’ve been seeded fourth for the highly competitive NCS playoffs. Are we possibly talking about another title?
It was the tennis Lady Dragons’ title turn on Friday, when juniors Michelle Stovall and exchange student Stephanie Brett paired up for a thrilling ride through the league doubles tournament which netted them an SCL doubles championship, and a spot in the challenging NCS doubles event.
Then on Saturday on the Spring Lake course in Santa Rosa, Sonoma’s cross country girls, led by senior Hannah Cenci’s career-best performance, ran a fabulous league championship meet race and captured an SCL co-title, which was the Lady Dragons’ first title in 26 years. The Sonoma runners will also compete in the NCS meets.
With a mix of experienced and young athletes returning for the 2013 season, there certainly could be more fall titles on the horizon.
Ciao!
