1 million consumers support Prop. 37
Editor, Index-Tribune:
I am writing to clear up confusion from the opposition’s TV ads about Proposition 37. Foods that are exempted by Proposition 37 already have restrictive laws in place regarding labeling. For example, alcohol is regulated under a set of federal laws – Section 1100809.2 (d) – and doesn’t have an ingredient label.
All foods that currently have ingredient labels will have to state whether GMO foods have been used in their making.
Restaurants have not been required to list the ingredients in their foods by Section 1100809.2 (h); this is their proprietary
information.
Proposition 37 states that any first-generation plant or animal food with DNA genetically modified will be labeled. Second generation GMOs, (the by-products of an animal that ate GMO feed) – meat, eggs, and milk – would not be labeled. The AquaBounty Salmon, if approved would be the only first-generation GMO animal labeled, if Proposition 37 passes.
Currently, 61 other countries label GMO foods. The Los Angeles City Council, United Farm Workers, farmers, doctors, California Nurses Association, 400 Chefs and over 1 million consumers support Proposition 37. Labels are the only way consumers can truly know what is in their food, and should have this right.
Please vote “yes” on Proposition 37.
