Youth soccer, volleyball camp sign-ups set

SONOMA VALLEY YOUTH Soccer Association is holding registration for the 2011 season beginning Friday, April 1, online, with four walk-in sign-up sessions slated from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, April 6 and 20, at Sassarini Elementary School, and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 30, at El Verano Elementary School, and on Saturday, May 7, at La Luz’s Booker Hall. Boys and girls who didn’t play during the 2009 and 2010 seasons need to provide a birth certificate to register. Scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis with proof of income, and must be applied for in person. Sibling discounts are offered to families with more than one player. Also, gear exchange – cleats, shin guards, practice jerseys and socks, all in clean condition – will take place during sign-ups at the different registration sites, or anytime after April 1, at Picazo Café and Deli on Arnold Drive at Grove St.

 

THE LADY DRAGONS Spring Volleyball Camps for girls in high school grades ninth and 10th, and middle school grades seventh and eighth, will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays, from April 4 to May 4, at Sonoma Valley High School’s Pfeiffer Gym. For ninth- and 10th-graders, the high school camp will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and is for advanced players to gain more detailed skill experience. The middle school camp for seventh- and eighth-graders takes place from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. and provides intermediate skills instruction for girls who have played organized volleyball and wish to prepare for high school and improve their skills. THE VALLEY OF the Moon Trap Club will hold its seventh annual Jim Meehan Memorial Trap Shoot and Barbecue at the club’s South Burndale Road site (27000 Burndale Road) on Saturday, April 30, with competition for men, women and juniors. The trap benefit event starts at 9 a.m. and the barbecue lunch, silent auction and raffle prizes and the awards presentation – including a commemorative silver belt buckle awarded to the winner of each event by class and high overall – begins at 11 a.m., with no-host beer and wine. All the proceeds will be donated to the the Sonoma Valley Girls Softball Association and Sonoma Valley 4-H. Entry fees for the shoot and lunch are $50 for adults and $35 for juniors (ages 16-and-under) – lunch only is $20 and children under-12-years-old are admitted free. Eyes and ears protection is mandatory. Donation tickets can be purchased at Steiners Tavern, 465 First St. W.; and Town Square, 482 First St. E. SONOMA VALLEY TENNIS Association will hold its Spring QuickStart program – under the direction of USPTA Pro Sam Levy – for ages 6-to-8 from 10 to 11 a.m., and 9-to-12-year-olds from 11 a.m. to noon, at the Maxwell Farms Regional Park courts (weather permitting) from Saturday, March 26, through Saturday, April 30. Also, STVA will hold a free adult tennis clinic, with beginning and re-entry instruction, directed by Levy, at the Maxwell Park courts from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Saturday in April – tennis shoes are required, while rackets and balls will be provided. SVTA will hold its Rally For The Cure Round Robin Doubles Tennis Tournament to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research – under the direction of USPTA pro Christi Hays – from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, at the Maxwell Park courts. A lunch and auction will follow the tourney at the George Ranch Clubhouse. Tournament registration begins in April. THE FOURTH ANNUAL Sonoma Valley High School Dragon Hall of Fame ceremony is slated to take place on Saturday, May 7, at the Lodge at Sonoma, starting with no-host cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and induction ceremonies at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event – which are $85 each and tax deductible – can be ordered by sending a check and self-addressed stamped return envelope to: Dragon Hall of Fame, c/o Vicky Mulas, P.O. SONOMA VALLEY YOUTH Football and Cheer Junior Dragons will continue its sign-up sessions for the 2011 season at Arnold Field from 11 a.m, to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, April 16 and May 21, and from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22. Forms required to register include the player/parent contract and code of ethics, and the NBYFC medical release. SONOMA BOCCE BALL Association, with more than 180 members, will start league play on Wednesday, April 13, at the bocce courts south of the gazebo in Depot Park, with three nine-week sessions ending on Wednesday, Nov. 2. New members are welcome to sign up for league play, with the annual membership cost being $20 a person. The SBBA is looking to establish a Saturday league. VALLEY OF THE Moon Pétanque Club will again be holding monthly tournament and picnic events, and is currently offering free lessons in the sport at the Henri Maysonnave Memorial Courts in Sonoma’s Depot Park on Wednesday mornings (weather permitting) at 10 a.m. Anyone interested in joining the VOMPC, or for more details, can call 343-9465 or visit www.vompc.org.
