Water polo Dragons in urgent need of a coach

Open field

Aug 8, 2011 - 03:06 PM

With the Sonoma Valley High School 2011 fall sports season ready to begin official workouts this Monday, Aug. 15, Sonoma’s water polo program is suddenly adrift without a coach.

With the economy still trying to recover, there have been a lot of job-market changes and cutbacks, which has taken its toll on schools and the many off-campus coaches who are needed to keep sports programs going.

Affected by the changes in workplaces around the country, there’s been a carousel of off-campus coaches, as well as teachers who coach, and Sonoma is, again, on the running-out-of-time ride.

As a result of a recent coaching conflict involving a work-schedule, former head coach Ken Noren, unfortunately, can not guide the Dragon boys’ and girls’ water polo teams.

This is a too-familiar scenario for the Dragons. Last year, Sherman Harris, who, as head coach, directed Sonoma’s successful track and field program for 17 years after serving as an events coach for three years, had to resign in the wake of starting a new job, which also had a work schedule that conflicted with his coaching responsibilities.

With the preseason fast-approaching, Sonoma is in urgent need of a water polo coach to direct the Dragon boys’ and girls’ squads.

Anyone interested in the coaching position should, as soon as possible, contact athletic director Bob Midgley at 933-4010, ext. 5272, or 694-0799.

Ciao!
