Virgil F Krueger passed away peacefully July 12, 2011.

He was born June 1, 1918, in Chase County, Kan. Virgil lived primarily in Wichita and Vassar, Kan., and spent his final months in Sonoma to be with family.

He proudly served two years in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and is a survivor of the battle at Okinawa. He missed the birth of his first daughter, Diana Rhoten, while crossing the Equator and only saw her for the first time at 14 months old. Virgil loved ballroom dancing, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Helen; daughter, Diana Rhoten, and her husband, Roger, of Sonoma; daughter, Jenene Johnson, and her husband, Jim, of Centennial, Colo.; grandchildren, Jeremy Rhoten, and his wife, Kim; and Carlo Johnson; great-grandchildren, Austin and MacKenna Rhoten. He was preceded in death by sister, Helen Mitchell; and brother, Glenn; and grandson, Zachary Rhoten.

A short memorial service will be held at Mountain Cemetery in the Veterans Memorial Park, Saturday July 16, 2011 at 4 p.m. Virgil's family wishes to thank and acknowledge the tremendous help and comfort that Sonoma Hospice was to him in his last weeks.
