Vicious dog regulation before council

Sep 1, 2011 - 02:42 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

Next week, the City Council will discuss the regulation of vicious dogs in Sonoma. I put this on the agenda because of the recent tragic death of a pregnant woman in her home by her own pet pit bull.

During the past several years, there has been an increase in attacks by vicious dogs, and I want to review what the City of Sonoma has in place to reduce the chances of similar tragedies happening here in Sonoma.

In 2006, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed (Brown absent) an ordinance that addresses regulations of potentially dangerous and vicious animals. I have compared that ordinance to current city regulations and believe a review of the county ordinance is a good place for us to start the discussion.

There are many reasons the county's ordinance could make sense for Sonoma, not only would it enhance the safety of our citizens, it would be consistent for the law enforcement and animal control officers who are responsible for all of Sonoma Valley.
