Vicious attack on Sonoma citizen

May 9, 2011 - 02:35 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I am writing to increase awareness of non-desirable activity on the streets of Sonoma.

On Thursday night, on the eve of Cinco de Mayo, between the hour of 8:30 and 9 p.m., a 65-year-old woman was assaulted while walking on the corner of Patten and Second Street East.

The woman was attacked from behind and pushed face first onto the cement. One half of her face was entirely bloody and her eye was swollen shut. She had literally just been giving thanks for the opportunity to live in such a place where we can walk and be safe, and where neighbors say hi to one another. She was enjoying the smells and sights of a beautiful Spring night. She saw nothing and only heard a group of male voices laughing after she went down.

Two other women, walking in that area at 8:30 p.m., said that two groups of caucasian high school, teen-looking males in groups of four, scared the walkers as they came out of an alley way between First and Second Street East.

The incident has been reported to officials and the victim requests to remain anonymous at this time. It is my hope to alert the community to be more conscious and responsible in regards to the activity on our streets and in our town throughout.
