Trashy fashion

The catwalk at the Sonoma Community Center highlighted the best of trashy couture on Saturday. And when we say trashy, we mean clothing made from trash.

From teabags to Target bags to cloth remnants, the designs of the Trashion fashion show, a benefit for the community center, showed just how creative Sonoma can be. The enthusiastic crowd burst into applause as each design entered, from a quinceañera dress made from maps to the "Advertisement Dress" made from junk mail (pictured). Melissa Spooner and Jan Lippold earned $500 making the Grand Prize winning dress titled "The Last Straw," crafted from emergency packets and thousands of plastic drinking straws.

The winner in the teen category was Abigail Reynolds, who built a dress from tin cans and leftover plastic. "Julie's Jacket" of found objects by Toni Denmark took home the prize for Best Accessory. See photos and video at sonomanews.com.
