Track Dragons battle in SCL championships, 17 qualify for NCS area meet

On an overcast and cool Saturday, the young Sonoma Valley High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams battled in the Sonoma County League championships in Windsor and 17 Dragons qualified with the top-six finishers advancing to the sectionals.
Competing in the North Coast Section Redwood Empire Area Meet at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park this Saturday, May 21, for Sonoma are seniors Caitlyn Silkey, Emma McGee, Danny Maggioncalda, Ray Mellinger, Devin McAllister and Omar Paz; juniors Alex Connors, Sarah Summers and Elizabeth Hernandez; sophomores Greg Maggioncalda, Chris Tose, Daniel Dwyer, Ali Romano and Laura Amador; and freshmen Tasi Sherpa, Ellen Angeloni and Kirsten Hodgson.
In the SCL boys’ championship meet, Petaluma won the team title with 127 points, followed by Casa Grande’s 104, Healdsburg’s 103, Windsor’s 67, Analy’s 52, Sonoma’s 35, and El Molino’s 4.
The Dragon boys were paced by Connors’ 3,200-meter second-place-medal finish – he led for 11 laps before being passed on the last lap by eventual winner Forrest Schaffer from Petaluma – in 9 minutes, 38.15 seconds and 1,600 fourth in 4:31.49; Dwyer’s pole-vault and triple-jump seconds at 9 feet, 6 inches and 35-2-1/4, respectively; Greg Maggioncalda’s 300-hurdles third in 42.83 and 110-hurdles fourth in 17.04; Mellinger’s shot-put fourth at 41-9 and discus 10th at 106-9; Tose’s 800 fourth in 2:03.37; Sherpa’s pole-vault fourth at 8-6; the fifth-place 1,600 relay team of Tose, McAllister, Danny and Greg Maggioncalda in 3:44.30; Paz’s shot-put fifth at 41-9 and discus eighth at 113-9; Danny Maggioncalda’s 400 sixth at 53.33; McAllister’s 800 seventh in 2:08.38; senior Zach Prohoroff’s shot-put seventh at 39-8; junior Steven Wedell’s 3,200 eighth in 10:42.17; frosh Owen Ljung’s 1,600 eighth in 4:46.22; junior Josh Heiser’s discus ninth at 107-0 and shot-put 11th at 37-5; senior Brandon Gossett’s 100 in 13.19; and sophomore Michael Norrbom’s triple-jump at 29-3.

In the SCL girls’ championship meet, Casa Grande won the team title with 106, followed by Petaluma’s 89, Healdsburg’s 84, Windsor’s 82, Analy’s 81, El Molino’s 27, and Sonoma’s 22.
Pacing the Lady Dragons were Summers’ 100-hurdles second-place finish in 18.11, 300-hurdles fourth in 51.86 and triple-jump sixth at 31-9; Silkey’s pole-vault third at 8-6; the fifth-place 400 relay team of Hernandez, Angeloni, McGee and Romano in 54.41; the sixth-place 1,600 relay team of Hodgson, Amador, Summers and McGee in 4:27.22; Romano’s 100 sixth in 13.7 and 200 eighth in 29.24; frosh Sachi Spaulding’s long-jump seventh at 12-4; Hodgson’s 800 eighth in 2:39.37; McGee’s 400 ninth in 64.35; Amador’s 800 ninth in 2:40.66; junior Suzanne Amaral’s shot-put ninth at 24-8 and discus at 51-7; junior Anelyn Burquez’s long-jump ninth at 11-11-3/4; sophomore Hannah Cenci’s 1,600 ninth in 5:49.83; sophomore Serena Spry’s 3,200 ninth in 13:27.87; frosh Maren Peterson’s 100 10th in 13.9; senior Jenna Wirick’s shot-put 11th at 24-5, triple-jump 12th at 26-1/4 and discus at 72-0; sophomore Macy Crawford’s shot-put 12th at 24-4; Angeloni’s 200 13th in 29.47 and 100 16th in 14.47; Hernandez’s 100 17th in 14.60; junior Brinkley Capriola’s shot-put at 21-9 and discus at 52-4; sophomore Regina Mellinger’s shot-put at 19-6 and discus at 42-10; sophomore Emma Conaway’s shot-put at 21-10; sophomore Naomi Blinman’s long-jump at 11-10; and sophomore Tsarina Claver-Secyugo’s long-jump at 10-7.
The Sonoma track and field teams are directed by head coach Linda Patterson, event coaches Andy Gibson, Colleen Hamilton and Stephan Fitzpatrick, and volunteer coaches Sherman Harris, John Litzenberg, Donny Albini and Danielle Lovejoy.
