Staples way out of place

Apr 7, 2011 - 05:24 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I am trying to recover from the shock of the big possibility of a Staples store being situated here in Sonoma. I am in agreement with all of those who wrote letters opposing such a plan.

Rick Pappas said it all in his April 1 Op-Ed piece. It is almost as bad as when we had the casino trying to build at the south end of our Valley.

How can our local merchants possibly stay in business with a giant like Staples moving in, winning over customers who just may be the thread that keeps them in business.

We moved here in 1983 because there were no malls nearby, no freeways. Sonoma has grown, yes, but it has not lost the basic personality and ambience of a small, "hi neighbor" kind of town.

We don't have to go far if we really need the services of a big-box store. In 20 minutes you can drive to Staples in Petaluma.

With a Staples in Sonoma, the traffic will be even more intense than it is now. So if we happen to be going to town from the north, now we'll get to sit in traffic and stare at the Staples sign ahead of us, along with tourists who have heard what a great destination Sonoma is.

Staples will generate more jobs in Sonoma.
And traffic wont be more of a problem. We already have a problem with traffic anyways. There is also a stop light to go in and out of staples.
Gas is not to cheap to drive to Napa or Petaluma to buy an office supply that our local stores dont have or carry.
I think is a very good idea to have a Staples Office supply Store here in Sonoma.
