Sonoma’s football boys, volleyball girls scrimmaging

Fall Dragons also starting cross country, girls golf, tennis, water polo

The football Dragons are headed to Santa Rosa High School tonight for their annual home-and-away preseason scrimmage against the Panthers at Ernie Nevers Field, with the junior varsity beginning at 5:30 and the varsity starting at 6:30 p.m.

On the heels of 10 practice days, Sonoma Valley High School’s football boys and volleyball girls will put their 2011 fall seasons in play by participating in annual scrimmages this weekend.

The varsity and junior varsity football Dragons will travel to Santa Rosa High School’s Ernie Nevers Field tonight for their yearly home-and-away preseason scrimmage against the Panthers, with the jayvee gridders beginning at 5:30, followed by the varsity scrimmage at 6:30 p.m.

After a bye the weekend of Sept. 2, the Dragon gridders will kick off their 2011 season by hosting nonleague Terra Linda on Friday, Sept. 9, at Arnold Field.

Sonoma’s volleyball program will send its varsity, jayvee and freshman teams to scrimmage in the annual Napa Jamboree tomorrow, Saturday, Aug. 27.

The Lady Dragon spikers will then open the nonleague portion of its schedule this Tuesday, Aug. 30, against Tamalpais in Mill Valley, before hosting Justin-Siena of Napa on Thursday, Sept. 1, in Pfeiffer Gym, with the frosh starting at 4, the jayvees beginning at 5, and the varsity playing at 6:30 p.m.

Sonoma’s cross country boys’ and girls’ teams hold their annual Cross Country Alumni Meet on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 5:30 p.m. on the Maxwell Farms Regional Park course, with all former cross country Dragons or Sonoma athletes, as well as any runner wanting to participate, welcome.

The Lady Dragon golfers tee-off their season playing Analy in their SCL opener in Sebastopol this Tuesday, Aug. 30, with the Sonoma tennis girls opening their SCL schedule at Petaluma on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Sonoma’s water polo program is currently finalizing the hiring of its new head coach, with an update to appear next week in the Index-Tribune.
