Sonoma water polo teams end season at REL tourney

Competing in the annual season-ending four-team Redwood Empire League championship tournament in Ukiah on Saturday, Sonoma Valley High School’s boys’ and girls’ water polo teams were topped by Marin Academy and Cardinal Newman, respectively, for fourth-place tourney finishes.

After dropping a 18-6 decision to top-seeded Marin Academy in the first-round, the Lady Dragons were edged 12-9 by Cardinal Newman in the third-place match.

Against Marin,  the Sonoma girls were paced by senior co-captain Ghitta Ferrara’s and sophomore Abigail Vankirk’s two goals each, and juniors Zoe Gaarder’s and Rose Greenberg’s one goal apiece.

Pacing the Lady Dragons in their loss to Newman were Ferrara’s six goals, Gaarder’s two and Greenberg’s one.

Rounding out the Sonoma girls’ team – which, along with the boys’squad, is coached by Dominic Quin-Harkin – are seniors Chloe Hubbard and Sarah Summers; juniors Jessica Hood and Leann Woods; and sophomores co-captain Madeline Cline and Shauny McVeigh.

The Dragon boys were sunk 10-3 by Marin Academy in the opener, with junior co-captains’ Arthur Morgan’s two goals and Chase Campion’s one goal.

Then the Dragons were upended 19-3 by Cardinal Newman for third-place, paced by Morgan’s two goals and a goal by junior Sebastian Amara.

Rounding out the Sonoma boys’ team are seniors Christopher Allard and Harlan Bryant; juniors Lawrence Arrington, Ryan Barmore, Wyatt Caselia, Wyn Davis and Brian Hurley; sophomores Jimmy Flatt, Miles Hagin, Gabe Rapozo and Jesse Summers; and freshmen Adam Curry and Caleb Horowitz.
