Sonoma track teams swim squads edged in SCL dual, tri-meets

The young Sonoma Valley High School boys’ and girls’ swim and track teams battled in their Sonoma County League home and road showdowns, respectively, on Wednesday, but, unfortunately, came up on the short end of the final scores.

In their SCL dual-meets against visiting Petaluma at the Agua Caliente Aquatic Center pool, the Dragon boy swimmers were edged 51-45, while the Sonoma girls, despite junior Ghitta Ferrara’s two individual-event wins and two relay victories, were clipped 78-61.

Pacing the Lady Dragons were Ferrara’s 50- and 100-yard freestyle first-places in 28.92 seconds and 1 minute, 5.14 seconds, respectively; the winning 200 medley relay team of Ferrara, Jamie Ballard, Marissa Balchinas and Allison Cogbill in 2:25.11; the victorious 200 free relay team of Ferrara, Balchinas, Ballard and Madeline Cline in 2:06.78; Balchinas’ 100 breast-stroke second in 1:33.55; Leigh Jensen’s 100 backstroke second in 1:28.74; Ballard’s 200 free second in 2:34.24 and 500 free third in 7:21.34; Cogbill’s 50 free second in 31.77 and 100 free third in 1:14.87; Cline’s 500 free second in 7:10.66 and 200 free third in 2:15.30; and Leanne Woods’ 50 free third in 33.02.

The Dragon boys were paced by Chase Campion’s 500 free first-place in 6:21.26; Ryan Barmore’s 200 free first in 2:18.43; Robert Woodworth’s 100 free first in 1:04.71 and 50 free third in 27.01; the second-place 200 medley relay team of Campion, Sebastian Amara, Matthew Leonard and Trey Garcia in 2:15.88; the second-place 200 free relay team of Campion, Woodworth, Barmore and Amara in 1:52.90; Amara’s 200 free second in 2:26.01; and Garcia’s 100 breast second in 1:35.24.

Sonoma’s swim teams, who competed at SCL foe Windsor yesterday – results not available at presstime – will host St. Helena in their regular-season and home finales this Wednesday, May 4, at the ACAC pool.

The Sonoma track and field teams were on the SCL road, with the Dragon boys’ score of 40 being nipped for second-place by Analy’s 42, while host Healdsburg won the tri-meet with 79.

Pacing Sonoma were Alex Conner’s 1,600- and 3,200-meter first-place finishes in 4 minutes, 38.15 seconds and 9:55.50, respectively; Chris Tose’s 800 first in 2:06.41 (personal record-PR); Devin McAllister’s 800 second in 2:10.80; Owen Ljung’s 1,600 second in 4:49.32 (PR); Greg Maggioncalda’s 300 hurdles second in 45.11 (PR) and 110 hurdles third in 18.45; Omar Paz’s discus second at 113 feet, 11 inches; Raymond Mellinger’s shot-put second at 44-1/2 and discus fourth at 108-6 (PR); Josh Heiser’s discus third at 111-3 and shot-put fourth at 36-10; and Steve Wedell’s 1,600 third in 4:54.52 (PR) and 3,200 fourth in 10:47.20.

In the girls’ tri-meet, Analy won with 89, followed by Healdsburg’s 41 and Sonoma’s 29.

The Lady Dragons were paced by Sarah Summers’ 100 and 300 hurdles first-places in 18.18 and 51.34 (PR), respectively, and triple-jump third at 30-4; the second-place 400 relay team of Elli Hernandez, Ellen Angelino, Emma McGee and Ali Romano in 54.49; Jenna Wirick’s triple-jump second at 30-9, long-jump fourth at 13-11, shot-put fourth at 25-2 (PR) and discus fourth at 75-4; Hannah Cenci’s 3,200 second in 13:30.16 (PR) and 1,600 fourth in 6:04.37; the third-place 1,600 relay team of Summers, McGee, Kirsten Hodgson and Laura Amador; and Romano’s 200 third in 29.15 and 100 fourth in 13.91.

Sonoma’s track and field teams end their regular season with SCL dual-meets against El Molino in Forestville this Wednesday, May 4.

A group of Dragons competed in last Saturday’s Fred Faucett Invitational in Vallejo, with the results appearing next week in the I-T.
