Sonoma soccer boys snare big win, girls earn two-match sweep

In their key regular-season finale on the Sonoma County League road, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity soccer boys turned in another clutch effort and captured a 3-1 payback win over a Windsor team which upended them 2-0 in their first meeting.
Leading the Dragons were senior Jo-Jo Sánchez’s and junior Daniel Montes’ one goal and one assist each, junior Manuel Young’s goal, and senior Connor Johnston’s assist.
The SCL second-place Dragon boys (10-7 overall, 9-3 SCL) will now await to see where they will be seeded for the postseason North Coast Section playoffs at this Sunday’s, Oct. 30, NCS seeding meeting.

After honoring their seniors before the action started, Sonoma’s varsity soccer girls battled SCL foe Windsor in Tuesday night’s home finale and pulled out a exciting 2-1 overtime win.
Sonoma’s seniors who were honored included Annie Studdert, Selena Caruso, Emily Wilber, Maddie Goertzen, Thalia Becerril, Cecilia Corona, Cassidy Hamilton and Danika Hedley.
Leading the Lady Dragons past Windsor were Caruso’s one goal and one assist, junior Caroline Knef’s goal and Hamilton’s assist.
On Wednesday, the Sonoma girls wrapped up their regular season with a rained-out makeup road match and snared a 1-0 victory over SCL foe Healdsburg behind sophomore Ellen Angeloni’s goal and Goertzen’s assist.
Rounding out the varsity Lady Dragons’ roster, directed by head coach Julio Leon and assistant coach Martha Ceja, were juniors Riley Ellis-Reis, Ashley Vail, Halli Dobson, Lindsey Jasperse and Naomi Blinman; sophomores Maria Hawing, Brenna Hamilton, Kirsten Hodgson and Megan Neely; and freshmen Monica Ramirez, Shelley Marmaduke and Alejandra Alvarez.

Sonoma’s junior varsity soccer boys defeated Windsor in Wednesday’s season finale and successfully defended their SCL title by finishing with their second straight undefeated league campaign with an 8-0-4 record.
A season wrap for the soccer Dragon jayvee boys’ and girls’ teams, and Sonoma’s girls’ jayvee and freshman volleyball squads will appear next week in the Index-Tribune.
