With their standout top-seven efforts at last Saturday’s North Coast Section Redwood Empire Area Meet at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, including one school record-breaking performance, three young Sonoma Valley High School track and field athletes advanced to this weekend’s prestigious NCS Meet of Champions.
Dragon juniors Alex Conner and Sarah Summers, and sophomore Greg Maggioncalda, are competing in the MOC event at Edwards Stadium on the University of California, Berkeley, campus, with the NCS championships beginning today and continuing tomorrow, Saturday, May 28.
At the NCS Redwood Empire area meet, Conner ran an impressive 3,200-meter race, which earned him third-place honors and a top-spot in Sonoma’s record books after running the challenging two-mile event in 9 minutes, 30.6 seconds, which broke former Dragon star John Litzenberg’s 23-year-mark of 9:34.83.
Conner gets his shot to lower his school record, and possibly finish in the top-four who qualify in each event for the renowned state meet on Friday and Saturday, June 3 and 4, when he runs in tomorrow’s MOC boys’ 3,200 race.
Today’s MOC action will feature the lone Lady Dragon, Summers, competing in the girls’ triple-jump after taking fifth-place at the NCS area meet, while Maggioncalda races in the preliminaries of the boys’ 300-hurdles event – with the finals set for Saturday – in which he claimed a third-place finish at the sectional area competition.
