Sonoma bocce ends spring leagues, starts summer play

Still openings in Saturday morning 9 a.m. league

The popular Italian game of bocce is going strong in the Valley with the nearing 200-member Sonoma Bocce Ball Association hosting multiple nine-week leagues throughout various days of the week, with the 2011 spring season recently ending, and the summer season now underway at the bocce courts south of the gazebo in Depot Park.

Wrapping up the spring season, the Wednesday morning league winner was the Lemoncello team consisting of captain Jack Doss, Janis Arendt, Ed Cebula, Paul Crowley, Denise Cousineau and Sandra Otanez.

In the Wednesday evening league, the Chianti team won behind captain Pat McTaggart, Jim Haver, Sue Labre, Bill Piersol and Patty Silva.

The Thursday morning league winner was the Pasta Power team comprised of captain Nicky Opatz, Mel McPherson, Helen Poelwijk, Robin Cordano, Jan McCarthy, Jim Lavaroni, Gloria Reiter and Joe Passanisi.

Winning the Friday morning league was the Gussie team consisting of captain Leo Sturn, Barbara Mosley, Ken Steiper, Nancy Boreum, Chuck Vetrano and Ray Kumli.

In the Friday evening league, the Bocce Bandits team won behind captain Bob Stauder, Peter Charles, Jean Behse, Lois Dorsey, Ellen Murphy, Mary Sher and Bill Young.

The Saturday morning league winner was the La Famiglia team comprised of captain Rose Cardinale, Ginette Cary, Tom Lee, Mark Lyon and John Fanucchi.

Winning the Sunday evening league was the Bocce Nostra team consisting of captain Bill Conte, Dorothy Ginocchio, Lynne Myers, Rosemary Haver and Bea Hanratty.

The Sonoma Bocce Ball Association’s 2011 league representatives are Julie Cebula, Ken McTaggart, Nicky Opatz, Roy Secrist, Barbara Mosley, Barbara Albert, Drinda Petroni and Sheila Fanucchi.
